what thickness to have

How to choose the thickness of string to suit your playing style.

The thickness of the strings you choose can vary the amount of power or control you have when playing.

Thicker strings will provide more power over control

Thinner strings will provide more control over power

A number of more popular and top end strings come in a variety of thicknesses to give you more choice with the same string construction. Coupled with a suitable tension, the strings can offer another dimension to find the best trade-off between power and control to suit your individual game style.

A selection of strings that are available in different thicknesses are: -

Babolat Xcel in 1.25mm & 1.30mm diameter

Babolat RPM Blast in 1.20mm, 1.25mm & 1.30mm diameter

Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour in 1.25mm, 1.30mm & 1.35mm diameter

Tecnifibre TGV in 1.30mm & 1.40mm diameter

Tecnifibre X-One Biphase in 1.24mm & 1.30mm diameter

Tecnifibre NRG2 in 1.24mm & 1.32mm diameter

Tecnifibre Black Code in 1.24mm & 1.28mm diameter

Tecnifibre Pro Red Code in 1.25mm & 1.30mm diameter

The choice of string thickness is another element that comes down to the player’s preference. Only by trial and error can the right combination of string, thickness and tension be chosen to all work together.
