Official Wimbledon 2014 Stringing Contractor

Apollo Leisure in association with Babolat were again the stringing contractor of "The Wimbledon Championships" for 2014. Below is how they got on this year.

Apollo Leisure ran the 2014 stringing service for the Championships at Wimbledon for a 6th successive year. 2014 was the second year in partnership with Babolat UK and we continued to use the Sensor. The service commenced on Saturday 14th June for the Qualifying event at Roehampton and ran up to the finals day at the All England Club on Sunday 6th July. In total there were 16 stringers, 7 administration staff and 6 runners employed for the 3 weeks by Apollo Leisure. The machines were previously used at the French Open, so once serviced and boxed they were transported over the channel to the Apollo Leisure warehouse in Dorset. Everything ran smoothly and fortunately with no rain delays for the mens final at Roland Garros we were all ready for setting up on the Friday before Qualifying.  Our first week of operation is quite challenging as we are working at 2 sites, restringing commences on Saturday 15th June for the Qualifying and Sunday 16th June for the early arrivals at the All England Club. Two of our stringers were able to use the same Sensor that they had been working on at Roland Garros and the players seemed to like the familiarity of the blue Sensor. Players will often query how tight a machine pulls and when you explained that they were last used at Roland Garros it seemed to make their tension choice easier.

Our checking in system was using Stringer software again and the process would involve scanning the players’ accreditation which would bring up their details. We have been working closely with the IT department all year at the All England Club and were pleased to be allowed to charge the main draw players and qualifying players direct from their prize money. The busiest days at Qualifying was the Monday at 195, followed by the Sunday at 193. The Qualifying is completed on the Thursday (weather permitting) and by close of play we had reached a new record of 790 rackets. Our team so far had included Vaclav Smat, Jamie Pethick, Karen Goodman, Jose De-Meneses, Rob Maessen, Jim Warner and Geoff George. We also welcomed Marco Rossani of Milan to the team who strung for 11 days.

Rackets ready for collection

On Friday 21stJune we moved the 6 machines from Roehampton over to Wimbledon to make it 12 in total. With space at a premium there is only room for this number of machines, ideally we would have room for a few more particularly for the Sunday to Tuesday period. The practice courts had been busy the whole week leading up to the main event and we booked in 103 on the Friday and 178 on the Saturday. As well as most of those mentioned before it was time to welcome more of our team: Richard Parnell, Gorka Alday, Petr Krejci, Misel Milovanovic, Petros Biris, Mark Maslowski, Dip Patel and our head stringer Paul Skipp. A lot of the top players were allocated stringers but for those early days it’s dealing with a huge wave of rackets and making sure every racket gets strung correctly, consistently and on time. Although nail biting at times, the system worked well and the stringers, admin staff and runners deserve a lot of credit. The previous record for the first Monday was 377 rackets and this was overtaken by 25 to 402 rackets. Since taking over the service in 2009 we have seen a steady rise in restring numbers, in that year we finished on 2316 rackets and by close of play on Sunday we had reached 3405 rackets.

This was an 18% increase on 2013 and gives us food for thought for 2015!
